The Challenge

The Durham coast line required a new two-platform railway station at Horden to serve the local community and support economic regeneration in the area. The station needed to provide modern, accessible facilities with level, step-free access from the adjacent car park to both platforms, whilst ensuring whole-life efficiency in terms of cost and maintenance. The project required delivery within a 12-week programme during 2020, coordinating multiple disciplines including platform construction, access infrastructure, and operational railway systems to create a compliant, fit-for-purpose station capable of supporting over 70,000 passenger journeys annually.

What We Did

Aaron Rail was procured by Story to deliver specialist rail works as part of the £2.5 million new station construction programme between April and July 2020. Our scope included:

  • Platform Fencing and Gates – installing compliant platform fencing and access gates to provide passenger safety and operational access
  • Installation of Signage – installing station signage to support passenger wayfinding and safety information
  • Specialist Labour and Safety Critical Supply – providing skilled rail labour and safety-critical personnel to support wider station construction activities

All works were delivered in coordination with the principal contractor and other disciplines, ensuring seamless integration of platform infrastructure, access routes, and station facilities to create a comfortable, modern station serving the local community.

The Outcome

  • New two-platform station successfully delivered, connecting Horden to the Northern Rail network
  • Compliant stepping distances achieved for passenger safety and accessibility
  • Level, step-free access provided from car park to both platforms
  • Estimated 70,000+ passenger journeys per year enabled, boosting local economy
  • Widened employment opportunities for local residents through improved connectivity
  • More maintainable asset delivered for Network Rail with whole-life efficiency
  • Modern, comfortable station facilities provided for the community
  • Non-compliances removed, enhancing passenger safety and operational standards

Added Value

This project demonstrates Aaron Rail’s ability to support new station construction programmes that deliver real social and economic value to local communities. By providing specialist rail capability and safety-critical labour within a tight 12-week programme, our teams contributed to infrastructure that connects residents to employment opportunities and wider regional services, whilst ensuring Network Rail receives a compliant, maintainable asset that serves the community for decades to come.
