The Challenge

In the early hours of Sunday, 20 July, a distressing situation unfolded on the M62, where a man attempted to take his own life by jumping from a bridge. The incident presented an immediate and critical risk to life, requiring rapid intervention, calm communication, and effective coordination with emergency services.

What We Did

While actively on patrol, Aaron Guard roaming operatives Mehrab Hussain and Mohammed Ahmed Khan recognised the signs of a developing incident and identified an individual in distress on the bridge.

Without hesitation, they stopped their patrol, engaged with the individual, and immediately contacted the police. Demonstrating composure, empathy, and sound judgement under extreme pressure, the operatives remained with the individual, speaking calmly and compassionately to help stabilise the situation.

They maintained continuous engagement, ensured the individual was not left alone, and prioritised safety at all times until emergency services arrived and took over. The scene was safely cleared by approximately 1am.

The Outcome

  • Early recognition of a life-threatening situation while on patrol
  • Immediate intervention prevented escalation and loss of life
  • Calm engagement maintained until emergency services arrived
  • Safe handover and resolution with no further risk to the public
  • Professional conduct and clear reporting throughout
