Lead HV Cable Hand / Puller / Installer (up to 400kV)

Role Summary

Lead the safe and efficient installation of HV cable systems up to 400kV, including complex pulls through tunnels, shafts, risers, pits, and across ducted, trough, and direct-buried routes. You will take ownership of planning and executing cable pulls, setting up winching and roller systems, coordinating cable crews, and liaising directly with clients and stakeholders on site as well as designers. The role requires strong practical capability, excellent safety leadership, and good IT skills for records, permits, and reporting.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Cable Installation & Pulling Operations

    • Lead HV cable pulling activities up to 400kV, ensuring correct methods for:
    • Tunnels, shafts, risers, pits, and restricted access environments
    • Ducted / trough / direct-buried cable routes
    • Set up and manage cable pulling systems, including:
    • Winches, pulling ropes, swivels, stockings, cable socks and ancillary equipment
    • Cable roller configurations (straight, corner, quadrant), bell mouths, sheaves, and protection systems
    • Control pull execution: monitoring tensions, speeds, route protection, communications, and coordination of crew.

Planning, Safety & Quality

  • Support method statement and lift/pull planning: route surveys, access arrangements, laydown areas, exclusion zones as well as ability to interpret temporary and permanent drawings.
  • Ensure correct use of permits, isolation requirements, RAMS, and adherence to safe systems of work.
  • Maintain high standards of workmanship: cable protection, bend radius control, pulling geometry, and damage prevention.
  • Complete and/or support QA records (check sheets, pull records, photos, as-builts, material traceability where required).

Leadership & Client Interface

  • Lead and coordinate cable pulling teams on site; brief crews, allocate tasks, and maintain productivity.
  • Act as a professional, client-facing lead on site: communicate constraints, progress, issues, and solutions.
  • Liaise with subcontractors and suppliers for equipment, consumables, and logistics.

Tools, Plant & Logistics

  • Coordinate use and basic checks of winches, rollers, drum jacks/stands, cable trailers, pulling ropes, and associated plant.
  • Assist with delivery planning, offloading, storage, and cable drum handling arrangements.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Essential Experience / Competence

  • Demonstrable experience pulling/installing HV cables up to 400kV.
  • Strong experience in tunnels/shafts/risers/pits and confined or complex routes.
  • Proven competence across ducted, trough, and direct-buried installations.
  • Confident setting up and operating winches and cable roller systems (including corners/complex pulls).
  • Strong safety mindset with ability to enforce standards and lead by example.
  • Client-facing communication skills and good team leadership.
  • Good IT skills (email, basic Office/Excel, digital permits/records/apps as used on site).
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel and stay away.

Desirable

  • Experience working with Transmission & Distribution owners (e.g., DNOs/TOs) or within their standards and site rules.
  • Experience on major HV infrastructure projects (substations, cable tunnels, joint bays)
  • Competence/certification relevant to HV works (e.g., National Grid / DNO safety passports, confined spaces, winch/plant tickets, first aid etc.)

Working Pattern / Benefits

  • Predominantly site-based with occasional visits to office/client/supplier locations.
  • Travel and staying away essential (accommodation/expenses covered in line with policy)
