The Challenge

The Hope Valley line between Manchester and Sheffield faced significant operational bottlenecks that prevented passenger trains from overtaking slower freight services, impacting capacity and journey times. Critical infrastructure improvements were required across multiple locations, including platform extensions, new accessible facilities at Dore & Totley station, a railway loop between Bamford and Hathersage, signalling enhancements, and safety improvements at Hathersage West. These works needed to be delivered in a live railway environment whilst maintaining operational integrity and passenger safety.

What We Did

Aaron Rail was procured to deliver essential civil engineering works as part of this major railway upgrade programme. Our scope included:

  • Platform Extensions – extending platforms to accommodate longer train formations and increase service capacity
  • Platform Copes Installation – installing platform edge copings to provide safe, durable platform edges in line with railway standards
  • Platform Drainage – designing and installing effective drainage systems to ensure platform safety and longevity

All works were completed in coordination with other contractors delivering the wider upgrade, including new footbridge infrastructure, railway loops, and signalling improvements, ensuring seamless integration across the programme.
