The Challenge

Gravesend Station required significant infrastructure upgrades as part of the Kent Train Lengthening Programme to accommodate 12-car trains on a busy commuter route into London. The works involved constructing a new platform and extending two existing platforms, requiring the removal of existing structures and installation of new compliant infrastructure to improve accessibility and passenger movement. Delivery needed to be achieved within a constrained rail environment, including a tightly programmed 15-day Christmas blockade, whilst maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and programme certainty in a live operational station.

What We Did

Aaron Rail worked collaboratively with principal contractor C Spencer Ltd to deliver key civils and rail activities over a 22-week programme. Our scope was delivered during the critical blockade period and included:

  • Trough Route Installation – installing cable trough routes to support power and signalling infrastructure
  • Trackside and Station Fencing – installing safety fencing to protect passengers and railway operations
  • Temporary Hoarding – providing temporary protection and site segregation during construction works
  • UTX Installation – installing underground trunking systems for essential utilities
  • Station Lighting Support – assisting with station lighting installations to enhance passenger safety
  • Track Realignment Works – supporting track realignment activities as part of the platform extension programme
  • General Civils and Rail Labour – providing specialist rail and civils capability, including safety-critical labour to support wider project activities

All works were integrated with the construction of a new AFA-compliant footbridge with lifts, ensuring coordinated delivery across the complex station remodelling programme.

The Outcome

  • Platform infrastructure successfully upgraded to accommodate 12-car train services
  • Additional capacity unlocked across the Kent network, improving reliability on a key commuter route
  • Improved accessibility delivered through new footbridge infrastructure with lifts
  • Reduced station congestion with enhanced passenger flow and movement
  • Critical blockade works completed safely and on programme within 15-day window
  • Works delivered in close coordination with wider delivery team in live rail environment

Added Value

This project demonstrates Aaron Rail’s capability to deliver complex, multi-disciplinary works within challenging operational constraints. By providing flexible specialist labour and integrating seamlessly with the principal contractor’s programme, our teams contributed to transformational capacity improvements on a vital commuter route whilst maintaining operational safety and programme certainty throughout a critical Christmas blockade period.
