The Challenge

BritNed required a comprehensive security improvement programme across its operational sites in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands to strengthen protection of critical infrastructure, personnel, and operational assets. The project demanded design and installation of new physical and electronic security measures within live, operational environments, requiring careful planning and close coordination to maintain site security throughout all works. Each site presented individual requirements and constraints, necessitating tailored solutions that integrated effectively with existing buildings, infrastructure, and security arrangements. Works required the coordination of multiple security systems and technologies whilst minimising disruption to BritNed’s day-to-day operations and maintaining continuous site access and security protocols.

What We Did

Aaron Engineering Group was appointed to design and install a comprehensive package of physical and electronic security upgrades across both BritNed sites in the UK and Netherlands. Our scope included:

Physical Security Infrastructure:

  • Replacement and upgrade of security-rated doors across multiple locations
  • Installation of upgraded security-rated gates to control perimeter access
  • Installation of security-rated roller shutters to protect critical operational areas
  • Upgrade and installation of perimeter fencing to strengthen site boundaries

Electronic Security Systems:

  • New CCTV camera installation and coverage improvements
  • Access control equipment installation and integration
  • Integration of electronic systems with physical security infrastructure

Project Delivery Services:

  • Comprehensive site surveys at all UK and Netherlands locations
  • Detailed design development for each site’s specific requirements
  • Coordination of all design elements with existing site infrastructure
  • Procurement management across multiple locations and supply chains
  • Installation management within live operational environments
  • Testing and commissioning of all security systems
  • Final handover and operational training

Innovation in Installation:

  • Vac-Ex technology deployed in the Netherlands for safe underground duct installation around existing services, reducing strike risk and minimising disruption
  • Coordinated design approach ensuring all physical and electronic security elements worked together as an integrated system

All works were delivered with detailed planning and close coordination with BritNed’s operational and security teams to maintain secure access and operational continuity.

The Outcome

  • Comprehensive security-rated doors successfully installed across all UK and Netherlands locations
  • Upgraded security-rated gates and roller shutters installed to protect critical operational areas
  • Perimeter fencing strengthened across all BritNed sites
  • CCTV coverage expanded and improved with new camera installations
  • Access control equipment installed and integrated with physical security systems
  • All security systems tested, commissioned, and handed over to BritNed operations
  • Integrated, coordinated security solution delivered tailored to individual site requirements
  • Works completed within live operational environments with zero security compromise
  • Operational continuity maintained throughout all installation phases
  • International delivery across UK and Netherlands locations completed successfully

Added Value

This project demonstrates Aaron Engineering Group’s capability to deliver complex, multi-disciplinary security upgrade programmes across international locations. By managing design and installation as a coordinated package, our teams provided BritNed with a resilient, integrated security solution that strengthens asset protection whilst seamlessly integrating with existing operational infrastructure. The innovative application of Vac-Ex technology in the Netherlands for safe underground duct installation showcases our commitment to finding practical, efficient solutions that reduce risk and minimise disruption. The successful coordination across multiple sites, security disciplines, and international operations—whilst maintaining full operational continuity and security protocols—demonstrates Aaron’s ability to deliver complex security improvements on critical infrastructure that directly enhances the protection of personnel and operational assets.
