The Challenge

Transport for Wales required lineside infrastructure enhancements at Rhymney to accommodate AdBlue refilling facilities for new hybrid trains, supporting the transition to more environmentally sustainable rail operations. The works involved complex civil engineering installations including foundation bases, underground utilities, water supply infrastructure, and access pathways—all requiring delivery in a live railway environment with strict safety and operational constraints. The project needed to be completed within a six-month programme to align with the introduction of the new hybrid fleet.

What We Did

Aaron Rail was procured to deliver comprehensive lineside civil engineering works. Our scope included:

  • CET and AdBlue Bases – installing Controlled Emission Toilet (CET) and AdBlue bases to enhance environmental sustainability and operational efficiency for the new hybrid fleet
  • Water Supply Troughing – installing associated troughing for water supply to ensure reliable and efficient distribution across the site
  • Underground Trunking (UTX) – installing 1-metre deep UTX using a multi-duct system to house essential utilities and protect infrastructure from damage
  • Concrete Footpath – laying 40 metres of concrete footpath to provide durable, low-maintenance walking surfaces
  • Type 1 Footpath – constructing 70 metres of Type 1 footpath, offering robust and cost-effective pedestrian access
  • Pipe Support Slabs – installing pipe support slabs to ensure stability and longevity of piping infrastructure

All works were delivered between June and December 2024 in coordination with Transport for Wales’ hybrid train introduction programme.

The Outcome

  • Essential AdBlue refilling infrastructure successfully installed to support hybrid train operations
  • Environmental sustainability enhanced through CET and AdBlue facilities
  • Reliable utility infrastructure installed with protected underground services
  • Safe, durable pedestrian access provided across the site
  • Programme delivered on schedule to align with hybrid fleet deployment
  • Works completed safely in live railway environment with no operational disruption

Added Value

This project demonstrates Aaron Rail’s capability to deliver complex lineside civil engineering works that directly support the rail industry’s transition to more sustainable operations. By integrating multiple infrastructure elements—from environmental facilities to utilities and access routes—our teams provided a complete solution that enables Transport for Wales to operate their new hybrid fleet efficiently whilst reducing environmental impact.
