The Challenge

Network Rail required an urgent upgrade to entrance security systems, replacing non-crash-rated automatic gates and road blockers with a certified hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM) solution. The existing infrastructure did not provide adequate protection against potential vehicle-borne threats, requiring a complete decommissioning and replacement with PAS 68 certified crash-rated gates. The project demanded swift delivery within a constrained timeframe to minimise any security vulnerability during the transition period, whilst ensuring the new system provided robust perimeter protection, improved access control, and maintained operational flow for authorised vehicles. All works needed to be integrated with existing traffic management systems and safety protocols.

What We Did

Aaron Access was appointed to deliver a comprehensive hostile vehicle mitigation upgrade, providing a full turnkey solution from decommissioning through to final commissioning. Completed within four weeks from spade in the ground, our scope included:

  • Decommissioning and Removal – safe removal of existing non-crash-rated automatic gates and road blocker systems
  • PAS 68 Bi-Folding Speed Gates – installation of 2 x Aaron 1040 PAS 68 trackless bi-folding speed gate systems, each providing 4.2m clear opening and 2.5m height, crash tested to withstand a 7.5-tonne vehicle travelling at 40mph
  • Civil Works – all associated groundworks, foundations, and surface preparation to support the new gate infrastructure
  • Electrical and Control Systems – comprehensive cabling installation to power and control the gate systems
  • Traffic Light Integration – integration with site traffic management systems to coordinate vehicle flow
  • Safety Systems – installation of safety equipment including detection loops, photocells, and emergency stop controls
  • Line Marking – final road marking to guide vehicle movements and define operational zones

The fast-operating trackless bi-folding design provides rapid opening and closing whilst maintaining certified crash-rated protection when closed.

The Outcome

  • Certified PAS 68 hostile vehicle mitigation solution successfully installed
  • Non-crash-rated infrastructure safely decommissioned and removed
  • Robust perimeter security providing protection against 7.5T vehicle at 40mph impact
  • Fast-operating gates enabling efficient operational flow for authorised vehicles
  • Full integration with traffic management and safety systems achieved
  • Project delivered within four-week programme from commencement to completion
  • Site security enhanced with certified, tested crash-rated protection

Added Value

This project demonstrates Aaron Access’s capability to deliver certified hostile vehicle mitigation solutions on accelerated programmes for critical infrastructure clients. By providing a complete turnkey package; from decommissioning existing systems through civil works, installation, integration, and commissioning, our teams ensured Network Rail received a fully operational, PAS 68 certified security solution within just four weeks. The trackless bi-folding speed gate design balances the highest levels of crash-rated protection with fast operation for daily access control, protecting critical rail infrastructure whilst maintaining efficient site operations.
